"Healthcare workers, persons in close contact with confirmed cases, and those with multiple sexual partners have a higher chance of getting infected," the ministry's warning stated.

Ministry Of Health Slams ‘No Work, No Pay’ on Resident Doctors Over Warning Strike

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has evoked the “No Work, No Pay” policy against the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) over its recent warning strike.

NARD had embarked on a nationwide seven-day warning strike on Monday over the continued detention of its abducted member , Dr. Ganiyat Popoola-Olawale.

In a statement Thursday signed by its spokesman, Ado Bako, the ministry expressed deep disappointment over NARD’s decision to embark on the warning strike.

The ministry said the association did so disregarding all negotiations and plea attempts by the federal government to resolve its concerns and ensure continued industrial harmony.

The ministry also said it found the decision to proceed with the strike action, in the midst of the ongoing discussions, deeply regrettable saying it believes that continued dialogue is the best approach to resolving any outstanding issues.

” In view of this, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare wishes to bring to the notice of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), that in line with extant labour laws, the Federal Government will evoke the “No Work, No Pay” for the number of days the strike was observed. This measure is not intended to undermine the legitimate concerns of our medical professionals but to ensure that essential healthcare services are not unduly disrupted to the detriment of the public,” the ministry said in the statement.

The statement said the ministry would not relent in its efforts to guarantee the safety, improve the welfare and working conditions of all healthcare workers, including resident doctors.

“Significant strides have been made in recent negotiations, and the government has demonstrated good faith by addressing many of the concerns highlighted by NARD,” it said.

The ministry further said that it had been working tirelessly over the past months, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, to ensure the immediate and safe rescue of Dr Ganiyat Popoola.

While saying that high-level discussions and coordinated efforts are currently underway, it said it remains confident that these measures will lead to a positive outcome.

The federal ministry of health also enjoined all resident doctors to return to the negotiation table so that they could collaboratively find lasting solutions to the challenges facing the healthcare sector.

“As always, the ministry remains open to constructive dialogue and is committed to working together with all stakeholders to achieve a fair and sustainable resolution,” it said.

54-Year-Old Nigerian Woman Delivers 11 Babies, Cries For Help

A 54-year-old Alake Latoyosi has delivered eleven (11) babies in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

She delivered the babies in two batches.

The first set of six arrived on 7 August, while the second arrived seven days later, on 14 August.

Her husband, Yahaya Nafiu, 56, is seeking help to support his family’s care for the babies and their mother.

He appealed to spirited individuals to assist him with money to enable him to cater to the babies and their mothers.

Nafiu is the Missioner of the Ilorin Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) in Port Novo, Ajasse, and Cotonou in the neighbouring West African country.

According to the father, a birth attendant took delivery of the babies on two occasions.

The babies consisted of eight males and three females, but two of the girls died during delivery.

Nafiu said the remaining nine are hale and hearty. However, he said he struggled to meet the huge financial cost of caring for them and their mother.

“A few days after the delivery of the first set of children, my wife said she felt strange movements in her stomach. After a scan was carried out at the hospital, the doctor revealed that she was carrying another set of children, which led them to contact the initial birth attendant, and the next set of five babies was delivered,” Nafiu said.

According to him, the pregnancy lasted over three years before the delivery.

He said the hospital could not ascertain the pregnancy position of his wife, resulting in the doctors being unable to carry out a Caesarian operation. The cleric attributed the experience to an evil spiritual influence on the doctors.

Nafiu further disclosed he had many children before the arrival of the decuplets, while his wife also had children from her previous marriage.

Sept 14: NCC Announces Final Deadline For NIN-SIM Linkage

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has directed all Mobile Network Operators, MNOs, to complete the mandatory verification and linkage of Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers (NINs) by September 14, 2024.

The NCC, on Wednesday, gave an update on the Federal Government’s 2020 policy to link all NINs to SIMs.

The Commission said that to date, over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked to a NIN, reflecting a compliance rate of 96 per cent, a substantial increase from 69.7 per cent in January 2024.

A statement signed by Reuben Muoka, Director, Public Affairs, the Commission said as the country approaches the final phase of the process, it seeks the continued cooperation of all Nigerians to achieve 100 per cent compliance.

“The complete linkage of all SIM cards to NINs is essential for enhancing the trust and security of our digital economy,” it added.

“By verifying all mobile users, this policy strengthens confidence in digital transactions, reduces the risk of fraud and cybercrime, and supports greater participation in e-commerce, digital banking, and mobile money services.

“This, in turn, promotes financial inclusion and drives economic growth.”

The Commission further revealed that through collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, and the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, it has uncovered alarming cases where individuals possessed an unusually high number of SIM cards — some exceeding 100,000.

“The Commission also remains committed to working with security agencies and other stakeholders to crack down on the sale of pre-registered SIMs, thereby safeguarding national security and ensuring the integrity of mobile numbers in Nigeria.”

It said to ensure full compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage policy, it has “directed all Mobile Network Operators, MNOs, to complete the mandatory verification and linkage of SIMs to NINs by September 14, 2024”.

“Effective September 15, 2024, the Commission expects that no SIM operating in Nigeria will be without a valid NIN.

“We urge all members of the public who have not yet completed their NIN-SIM linkage, or who have faced issues due to verification mismatches, to visit their service providers promptly to update their details before the deadline. Alternatively, the approved self-service portals are available for this purpose.”

The NCC also reminded the public that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs are criminal offences punishable by imprisonment and fines.

We encourage citizens to report any such activities to the Commission via our toll-free line (622) or through our social media platforms.”

The Commission thanked the general public for cooperating in the quest to strengthen Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

Tinubu Government Bans Students Below 18 From Writing WAEC, NECO

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has Prohibited Individuals under the age of 18 from Taking part in the National Examination Council and West African Examination Council Exam.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman disclosed this when he featured on Channels Television’s ‘Sunday Politics’ program on Sunday night.

Mamman explained that the federal government has directed WAEC, which conducts the West African Senior School Certificate Examination and NECO, which oversees the Senior School Certificate Examination to enforce the 18-year age requirement for candidates wishing to take these exams.

He added that the age limit for candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, administered by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, remains set at 18 years.

He said, “It is 18 (years). What we did at the meeting that we had with JAMB (in July) was to allow this year and for it to serve as a kind of notice for parents that this year, JAMB will admit students who are below that age but from next year, JAMB is going to insist that anybody applying to go to university in Nigeria meets the required age which is 18.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this is not a new policy; this is a policy that has been there for a long time.

“Even basically if you compute the number of years pupils, and learners are supposed to be in school, the number you will end up with is 17 and a half – from early child care to primary school to junior secondary school and then senior secondary school. You will end up with 17 and a half by the time they are ready for admission.

“So, we are not coming up with new policy contrary to what some people are saying; we are just simply reminding people of what is existing. In any case, NECO and WAEC, henceforth will not be allowing underage children to write their examinations. In other words, if somebody has not spent the requisite number of years in that particular level of study, WAEC and NECO will not allow them to write the examination.”

200 People Killed, At Least 140 Injured In Fresh Attack

An armed group linked to al-Qaeda, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), has claimed responsibility for what it says was an attack that killed up to 200 people and injured at least 140 in central Burkina Faso.

The attack took place on Saturday in the region of Barsalogho, about 40km (25 miles) north of the strategic town of Kaya, which analysts said is home to the last standing force protecting the capital, Ouagadougou.

Fighters opened fire on teams of people digging trenches designed to protect security outposts. Several soldiers were missing after the attack, and the attackers took weapons and a military ambulance.

Reporting from Dakar, Senegal, Al Jazeera’s Nicholas Haque said JNIM posted gruesome videos of the aftermath of the attack.

“We see men, women and children laying inside the trenches they were digging themselves. Effectively, they have turned into mass graves,” he said, adding that the hospital in the area has called doctors, nurses and other medical staff from Kaya to treat those who have been injured in the attack.

Haque noted that the Burkina Faso army knew on Friday that an attack was going to happen and called on the population to dig trenches.

That shows the desperation of Burkina Faso’s forces, who have lost control of half of their territory to armed groups linked to al-Qaeda,” he added.

Burkina Faso has severed its ties with Western countries such as France that had been involved in helping the country’s security forces tackle armed groups.

Haque said that recently the government had been calling on the help of Russian mercenary fighters to support it strategically but also to help stem the attacks.

Despite that help, it seems that those attacks are getting closer and closer to the capital,” Haque said. He noted that the country’s military leaders, who came to power in a coup in 2022, have also had to face down several attempted coups due to discontent with the way it has struggled with the fight against armed groups.

Armed groups have killed thousands of people and displaced more than two million in Burkina Faso over more than a decade.

The country has topped the recent Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) list of the world’s most neglected displacement crises.

The violence killed more than 8,400 people last year, double the number of deaths from the previous year, according to the NRC.

Perm Sec Beats Head Of Department To Coma

The Anambra State Government, on Sunday, said it would take necessary action to address the fight and alleged “strangulation” that occurred between the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Chinwe Achugbu and one of the Heads of Department, a female, in the ministry, whose identity had yet to be ascertained.

Achugbu was one of the new permanent secretaries recently appointed by the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

Our correspondent gathered on Sunday that the fight between the duo reportedly happened on Thursday, August 15, in the office during an argument over a yet-to-be-disclosed matter which led to one of them strangling the other person to a coma.

Although the cause of the fight had not been fully ascertained, reports have it that it took the intervention of some persons around the ministry who separated the two persons before normalcy returned to the ministry.

A reliable source In the ministry, who craved anonymity, disclosed the development to journalists, on Friday, alleging that the permanent secretary inflicted severe injuries on the HOD, to the extent that she was immediately rushed to the Emergency Ward of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku-Awka, before she was resuscitated.

It was further gathered that physical assaults had become a recurring act among top staff members in the ministry while subordinates were afraid of reporting the excesses for fear of being victimised.

The source said, “Yes, the incident happened. Everything in that story happened. I was there that day and everything happened before my face. The two of them fought over a yet-to-be-disclosed matter and the PS tried to strangle the HOD, as she held her neck for several minutes.

“It was a very chaotic moment. It took the intervention of other persons around before normalcy returned after the HOD was rushed to the hospital because she fell into a coma.”

Another source and employee in the ministry also confirmed the development, to PUNCH Metro on the condition of anonymity, saying the matter had not been officially complained to the appropriate quarters because of the status of the personalities involved.

According to him, some top officials in the ministry were trying to sweep the matter under the carpet.

However, when contacted at her office at the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare located at Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka, for her reactions to the allegations, the Perm. Sec. declined comments, saying that she was forbidden to speak, as a person under authority. She further directed the reporter to “go and ask the Head of Service.”

When also contacted on what steps had been taken to address the development, the Head of Service, Theodora Igwegbe, said she was aware of a reported fight at the ministry through social media but had yet to officially be briefed on what happened.

Igwegbe vowed to take action after an investigation and findings had been concluded on the matter.

“I saw the report on social media on Friday, August 23, 2024. I have not received a formal report against the Permanent Secretary in question as provided by Section 7, Chapter 10 of the Public Service Rules (2021).

“That notwithstanding, I have started asking questions to ascertain what happened while I await a formal report, which should be the beginning of a process. Thank you,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, on her part, could not be reached for comments on the development as messages and calls to her telephone line were not responded to.

Section 7 of the Public Service Rules (2021) includes sanctions for erring workers and misconduct, guidelines for worker conduct, penalties for failure to discharge functions by established practice. These penalties aim to ensure that public servants maintain a high standard of conduct and performance in their duties.

Fidelity Bank Affirms Commitment to Data Protection and Strong Corporate Governance

Lagos, Nigeria, August 21, 2024:  Our attention has been drawn to a news story titled, “NDPC Fines Fidelity Bank for Data Breach”. While the matter is a subject of an ongoing engagement with the regulator, we wish to assure the public that we have conducted ourselves to the highest ethical standards by ensuring full compliance with extant laws on data protection.

Below is a breakdown of our dealings with the NDPC since we received their letter informing us about an alleged data breach:

On April 30th, 2023, we received a notice of investigation from the Nigerian Data Protection Agency (NDPA), now the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC). The investigation was in respect of a complaint from [name has been withheld to protect the identity of the complainant] who claimed that [name withheld] details were used to open an account in the bank without [name withheld] consent.

Based on this notice, we conducted an internal investigation into the circumstances around the claim and discovered as follows:

An account opening request was received online in the name of [name withheld], and an email was sent to the email address attached to the request informing them about this.

In compliance with our Data Protection policy, accounts created online without full documentation are not allowed to be operational and are closed after 30 days if the outstanding documents are not provided to authenticate the identity of the person seeking to open the account.

In compliance with our data protection laws, the account was not allowed to be operational as the passport photograph and BVN were not provided.

The account was immediately placed on “Post No Debit” status as the applicant was expected to complete the account opening process by providing the outstanding documents for verification within 30 days. This was not done, and the account was eventually closed.

On May 2nd 2023, we responded to the NDPC that the bank did not violate any law because there was no data breach and that the account opening process was not completed. On our part, we carried out due diligence by immediately blocking the account and subsequently closing the account when we did not receive the outstanding documents.

At no point in the process was the account ever operational.

On July 7th, 2023, we were invited for a Pre-Action meeting with NDPC. During the meeting, we restated our position as earlier communicated to them in our letter dated May 2nd.

However, despite our explanation and evidence provided to support our claim, the agency informed us that they had reached a conclusion to impose a penalty on the bank.

On 5th December of 2023, we got a letter from NDPC demanding we pay a ‘remedial fee’ of N250 million within 21 days.

We immediately commenced another round of engagements with the Commission as we were convinced, we had not breached any extant law or regulation.

While discussions were still ongoing with the NDPC, we received another letter on the 20th of August demanding that we now pay N555.8m naira.

Dangote Refinery Begins Petrol Production Test-Run

The 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote refinery is undergoing test runs for Premium Motor Spirit or petrol production, with full operation expected by mid-September.

This was revealed by Reuters quoting a note by industry monitor IIR Energy.

The $20bn refinery built by Aliko Dangote, which has so far only produced diesel and other distillate fuels, had earlier said that petrol deliveries from the refinery would start in July. Before that, the refinery had aimed to start making the motor fuel by May.

“It is possible that there could be further extensions”, IIR said in a note to clients.

Once fully operational, the refinery is set to upend the Europe-to-Africa fuel trade and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined products.

Earlier in the month, the Federal Government’s committee which was set up to ensure the implementation of crude oil sales to local refineries in naira, had reached an agreement with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery for the rollout of petrol in September this year.

The report stated that the Federal Government also disclosed that the sale of crude oil to Dangote Refinery and other local refineries will commence on October 1, 2024.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, announced this during a meeting with the Implementation Committee in Abuja.

Also at the meeting, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr Zacch Adedeji, and the Chairman of the Technical Sub-Committee reported that “The first PMS delivery from Dangote is expected next month under existing agreements.”

Breaking: Chinese Investors Seize Another Nigerian Jet In Canada

Chinese firm on a confiscation blitz of Nigerian assets has finalised repossession of a luxury jet owned by the West African country in Canada.

Zhongshang Fucheng Industrial Investment Ltd recently received a change of custodian paperwork for the Bombardier 6000 type BD-700-1A10 aircraft from Canadian authorities in Montreal, The Gazette heard from sources familiar, months after a Canadian court issued a judgement that empowered Zhongchang to seize the jet from Nigeria.

“The court granted orders for Zhongshang to seize the plane earlier this year, but the change of custody from Nigeria to Zhongshang was only recently concluded,” a person familiar with Zhongshang’s activities said anonymously to discuss the matter. “Zhongshang will not stop seizing Nigeria’s assets worldwide until the last cent of the arbitration awards has been paid.”

Judge David Collier of the Superior Court of Quebec had on March 21, 2024, quashed Nigeria’s arguments to keep ownership of the aircraft, which records showed was purchased for $57 million by fugitive Dan Etete as part of his spending binge shortly after netting over $350 million windfall from the lucrative but corrupt sale of OPL 245 oil field in 2010.

Nigeria first seized the aircraft, with tail number M-MYNA and serial number 9471, from Mr Etete in 2016 and trapped it in Dubai. Flight tracking websites showed it was then flown suddenly to Canada on May 29, 2020, where Nigeria quickly obtained a court order for seizure and held it at the main airport in Montreal. A Canadian firm, Tibit, sought to claim ownership, but Canadian courts allowed Nigeria to remain in charge of the aircraft.

In 2023, Zhongshang moved to seize the jet, which could accommodate up to 19 people, while pursuing enforcement of its arbitration awards of over $70 million against Nigeria.

Judge Collier said Nigeria failed to enter a dispute against the aircraft’s seizure by Zhongshang, declaring the country’s argument that it could not respond to the lawsuit for nine months over the February-March 2023 general elections was frivolous and unacceptable.

The judge also rejected Nigeria’s sovereign immunity claim along the lines already itemised by the arbitration panel and courts in the United Kingdom. An appellate court in the United States also recently ruled that Nigeria cannot claim sovereign immunity from Zhongshang’s recovery of its arbitration judgment.

With the Bombardier luxury aircraft now in its possession, Zhongshang has successfully seized Nigeria’s assets in the UK, France and Canada, where the country’s guest houses, presidential jets and the Etete jet have been confiscated, respectively – with potentially more seizures expected in Belgium and the U.S. in the coming weeks.

Although Nigeria has lost all its challenges against the Chinese investors in at least five countries, it has nonetheless maintained no wrongdoing in the lawsuits, which stemmed from a botched free trade zone contract in Ogun State.

Nigeria and Ogun State have disclosed ongoing efforts to resolve the matter with Zhongshang, although no headway has been recorded since the parties first met in London from September 27-29, 2023. A spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu did not immediately return a request seeking comments on the latest development. (Text, excluding headline: Peoples Gazette)

Breaking: FG Increases Nigerian Passport Fees

The Federal Government has approved an upward review of the fees for the Nigerian Passport effective from 1st September 2024.

The spokesman of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), DCI Kenneth Udo, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, adding that the move was a part of the efforts to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard Passport.

Based on the review, a 32-page Passport booklet with 5-year validity previously charged at Thirty-five Thousand Naira (N35,000.00) will now be Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000.00) only; while a 64-page Passport booklet with 10-year validity which was Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000.00) will be One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00) only.

“However, the fees remain unchanged in Diaspora,” he said.

While expressing regrets about any inconvenience this increase might cause prospective applicants; the NIS assured Nigerians of unwavering commitment to transparency and quality service delivery at all times.

1,500 Osun Residents Benefit from Fidelity Food Bank Outreach

Over 1,500 residents made up of women, children, widows, and the elderly have benefited from the one-day feeding program organized by Fidelity Bank in Osun State.

The food bank project was held at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Osogbo, Osun State under the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative created to reach out to vulnerable persons and reduce the effect of hunger in the society.

Speaking at the distribution event, the Divisional Head, Brand and Communication, Fidelity Bank Plc, Dr. Meksley Nwagboh, described the Food Bank Initiative as the bank’s contribution towards helping the less privileged in the society.

Highlighting the bank's commitment to supporting the underserved communities in its outreach efforts in the Osogbo and environs, he noted that, “Food security is a pressing challenge, and as a socially responsible organization, we are committed to tackling this issue. We collaborate with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to identify communities in dire need and provide much-needed food support.

According to Nwagboh, “There is always a significant turnout of people during our Food Bank outreaches. This program holds every month, and the distribution of the food packs takes place simultaneously across all regions of the country. Today, we brought over 1,500 packs of food items to be distributed to the people and plan to continue to do more in communities across the country to help those in need.”

Applauding the initiative by Fidelity Bank, Reverend Father Michael Domingo of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Osogbo stated that, “It is surprising and commendable that a bank in Nigeria is giving back to the community.  We are aware that banks are known for taking, but Fidelity Bank is giving back to the people.

“The Fidelity Food Bank initiative is worthy of emulation which is why the Catholic Church has a working relationship with the Bank. We recognize its uniqueness and appreciate how it helps the community."

On his part. Reverend Father Joseph Komolafe, the host priest, encouraged affluent individuals to follow Fidelity Bank's example in combating hunger adding that, "You don't have to wait until you have plenty before you give out. Share what you have, no matter how little, for the progress and development of society," he stated.

The Fidelity Food Bank Initiative continues to make a significant impact, providing vital support to those in need and reinforcing the bank's commitment to social responsibility.

Ranked as one of the best banks in Nigeria, Fidelity Bank is a full-fledged commercial bank with over 8.3 million customers serviced across its 251 business offices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom as well as on digital banking channels.

The bank has won multiple local and international awards including the Export Finance Bank of the Year at the 2023 BusinessDay Banks and Other Financial Institutions (BAFI) Awards, the Best Payment Solution Provider Nigeria 2023 and Best SME Bank Nigeria 2022 by the Global Banking and Finance Awards; Best Bank for SMEs in Nigeria by the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2023; and Best Domestic Private Bank in Nigeria by the Euromoney Global Private Banking Awards 2023.

NGX Rates Fidelity Bank Highest On Corporate Governance

Fidelity Bank Plc complies with the highest corporate governance standards as the leading commercial bank adheres promptly to all full disclosure requirements and global best practices.

Fidelity Bank is awarded CG+, the highest rank under the Corporate Governance Rating System (CGRS), which screens quoted companies against prescribed best practices and standards.

A review of the latest compliance report showed that Fidelity Bank sustains its highest-ranking rating of CG+, with shareholders and market pundits commending the high corporate standards of the bank.

Head, Listings Regulation Department, NGX Regulation (NGXRegco), Mr. Godstime Iwenekhai, explained that the CGRS was designed to strengthen the governance structures of listed companies and provide a valid basis for discerning investors to differentiate between listed companies on the basis of their compliance with acceptable standards of corporate governance.

“In our view, corporate governance promotes ethical business practices, transparency and fair competition,” Iwenekhai said.

He pointed out that the special character combination “CG+” underlined compliance with best practices and highest corporate governance standards, which entitle the rated companies to special privileges at the stock market.

Corporate governance compliance at the stock market includes prompt submission of detailed operational results from period to period as required by the market rules, full disclosures of all material and regulated information and accurate rendition of reports and accounts.

Also, compliance includes ensuring that the company’s shares are not encumbered in a way that impinges on free float or number of shares available to the general investing public for efficient price discovery, compliance with all investor-protection safeguards in communication with shareholders and organizing statutory meetings as required among others.

The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) noted that the compliance tracker was aimed at maintaining market integrity and protecting the investors, noting that listed companies are required to adhere to high disclosure standards.

“Financial information which is periodic disclosure and on-going material events disclosure should be released to NGX in a timely manner to enable it efficiently perform its function of maintaining an orderly market,” NGX stated, referencing some of the criteria for its corporate governance rating.

Market experts and shareholders agreed that corporate governance compliance is a major factor in deciding on investing in a public and the safety of such investment.

Managing Director, Arthur Steven Asset Management, Mr. Olatunde Amolegbe, said corporate governance compliance rating is “extremely important” as it indicates to the investing public the quality of compliance of a company to listing requirements.

“As you know, stock prices are driven primarily by available information and the NGX has a minimum level of disclosure expected of quoted companies. This disclosure helps the public make qualitative decisions as to the state or performance of the companies they are seeking to invest in. These markers are therefore the initial indicators as to whether the companies are meeting their disclosures and other regulatory obligations or not,” Amolegbe, a former president of Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS), said.

Managing Director, APT Securities & Funds, Mallam Garba Kurfi, said the corporate governance rating “shows the extent companies are in compliance with corporate governance”.

“High rating means very good in doing the right thing timely while low rating discourages foreign investors from investing in such companies,” Kurfi, a leading market operator and member of the board of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), said.

Managing Director, HighCap Securities, Mr David Adonri, noted that “CG+ means excellent corporate governance rating”.

“When a company is organised and upholds good corporate governance, the benefit to stakeholders is maximized,” Adonri said.

Investors said its high corporate governance was one of the compelling reasons they chose to invest in Fidelity Bank.

President, Association for the Advancement of Rights of Nigerian Shareholders (AARNS), Dr. Faruk Umar said Fidelity Bank has a very good corporate governance structure that reassures investors of the safety of their investments.

According to him, while the bank has a good succession plan, the calibre of the independent non-executive directors on the board gives shareholders strong confidence of the kind of board oversight they will be expecting.

National Coordinator, Independent Shareholders Association of Nigeria (ISAN), Mr. Moses Igbrude, said Fidelity Bank’s impressive performance over the years had been built on good corporate governance.

“My appeal to the board is to continue to imbibe good corporate governance in order to sustain this growth,” Igbrude said.

National Coordinator, Pragmatic Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Mrs. Bisi Bakare, said Fidelity Bank has created a “very excellent impression” in the minds of shareholders.

According to her, the bank has continually showcased exemplary leadership with continuous impressive results, with successive growths over the past five years.

“Fidelity Bank is a very good bank that shareholders are very happy with their investments and we have never regretted buying into Fidelity Bank,” Bakare said.

National Coordinator, Progressive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Mr. Boniface Okezie said good corporate governance was the cornerstone of Fidelity Bank’s sustained growth and impressive returns over the years.

“Fidelity Bank remains one of the best stocks that investors should look forward to investing in for better returns. I’m very optimistic about the bank’s healthy strong assets. With its good corporate governance and excellent customers’ service, there is every reason to hope for a more promising future,” Okezie said.

The NGX tags defaulting companies for poor corporate governance and also applies various monetary and non-monetary sanctions, including fines ranging between N100,000 to N100 million, partial or full suspension of trading, naming and shaming with a red alert tag and compulsory delisting in extreme cases.

We Won’t Be Silenced Over Mass Suffering In Nigeria — NLC

Following the invitation of the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, by the police on allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime, the labour movement yesterday said it will not be silenced by state-sponsored harassment, intimidation, attacks and persecution.

The NLC said it remained committed to its opposition to mass suffering and hunger occasioned by the anti-people policies of the Federal Government, saying some interest groups are doing everything possible to silence the current leadership of Congress.

It also called on Its affiliates to shut down the economy should Ajaero be arrested by the police.

This is as human rights activist and lawyer to the NLC, Chief Femi Falana, SAN, explained why Ajaero could not honour Police invitation for him to appear at the Force Headquarters yesterday, saying the labour leader can only appear on August 29.

These came as global workers’ groups and civil society organisations in the country, including Amnesty International Nigeria, ActionAid, among others, yesterday expressed angst against Ajaero’s invitation by the police.

One of the leaders of NLC, told Vanguard last night: “There are grand designs by some interest groups to silence NLC under the current leadership. But they fail to understand that we cannot be silenced.

“We are fighting a just cause. We have the right to express our views in a democracy. The workers elected us to fight and make demands for them. They are hungry, they are suffering, and they are dying and are in pain. These are what we are telling the government which they do not want to hear. These are the reasons they are after us, trying to cow us by all means.

“The operator of the bookshop (Iva Valley) has been on the second floor of Labour House for years. We did not bring him there. If he has issues with the police, what concerns us? We believe the state is using this as a cover-up. They aim to emasculate Labour because of their vested interest.”

Meanwhile, NLC has intimated the international community, the International Labour Organisation, ILO, and the International Trade Union Confederation, ITUC, over the harassment, intimidation, and Police summoning of its President, Joe Ajaero over alleged criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime.

Also, lawyers, under the Abuja Human Rights Lawyers and Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, led by Deji Adeyanju, and his group yesterday stormed Labour House, which is NLC headquarters, to show solidarity and vowed to follow the NLC President to the Police station whenever he was honouring the invitation.

According to lawyers, if need be, the Police should be prepared to arrest and detain all of them, alongside the NLC President.

Rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, who confirmed this, said: “Yes, a coalition of Abuja lawyers just submitted a letter to the Police from Femi Falana, SAN, on behalf of NLC. Myself and three other lawyers, under the leadership of Femi Falana, did so today (yesterday).”

Report gathered that NLC leaders, besides sending the communiqué of the National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of yesterday to ILO, ITUC, has also intimated the international community of the grave developments of state harassment, intimidation, molestation of NLC and its leadership.

Already, the ITUC, which represents 191 million members of 337 affiliates in 167 countries and territories, including Nigeria, has raised the alarm over what it described as escalating attacks on the trade union movement in Nigeria.

ITUC in a statement by its General Secretary Luc Triangle, said: ITUC is gravely concerned by the escalating attacks on the trade union movement in Nigeria.

‘’This week, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, was summoned by the police as part of an investigation into ‘criminal conspiracy’ and ‘terrorism financing’.

‘’Earlier this month, heavily armed security forces raided and occupied the headquarters of the ITUC-affiliated NLC, arresting a union worker and wrecking the organisation’s bookshop. Reports indicated that 13 people were killed by security forces during a protest for economic justice.

“Since 2023, Nigerian trade unions have faced a campaign of harassment and intimidation, including the violent assault of Joe Ajaero in November. The situation in Nigeria is deeply concerning. These latest events come on the back of a sharp rise in intimidation and repression of trade unions.

“This includes the harassment of activists, the violation of collective bargaining rights and the violent suppression of peaceful protests.

“We see the systematic contravention of ILO conventions by the Nigerian government, particularly those related to freedom of association and the right to organise.

“Nigeria is a leader in Africa, it is important that the government there sets a good example regarding respect for human and labour rights and the rule of law. We call on the government to stop these attacks, including the intimidation and judicial harassment of Joe Ajaero and the NLC.”

Kwara State Student Dies Three Weeks After Her Sign–Out (Photos)

A 21-year-old final-year student of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, Awesu Mojisola Oluwafunmike, celebrated her sign-out three weeks before she was found @ad in a refuse site.

She posted photos and videos from her sign-out ceremony before she went missing on August 9, 2024.

A Kwara lecturer, Prof Anifowose Olamilekan, said the deceased's mother works for the Ogun State Waste Management Agency as a cleaner.

According to a report by her roommate, Miss Blessing O, the deceased received a phone call on August 9 from one Miss Timileyin, who informed her about an event organized by students of Summit University and Al-Hikmah University in Ilorin.

Miss Timileyin introduced Mojisola to one Mr Adebayo Happiness, a student of Summit University, who allegedly invited her to the night party under the pretense of having her act as his girlfriend for a fee of Fifteen Thousand Naira (#15,000.00).

Upon her arrival in Ilorin, Miss Mojisola informed her roommate that she felt uncomfortable in the hotel she was lodged by Adebayo Happiness and noted that there was no party at the said location.

Shortly after this communication, her phone was switched off and all subsequent efforts by Miss Blessing to reach her were unsuccessful.

The spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, said on August 12, 2024, at about 7.30, one Olorunoje of Aleniboro area Ilorin, Kwara State visited the police to report that while he was returning home from the mosque on August 11, a group of labourers informed him that they found the body dumped in a refuse site near Aleniboro area Ilorin, Kwara State.

Ejire-Adeyemi stated that following this report, a team of detectives was immediately dispatched to the scene. She said upon arrival, the scene was carefully examined and photographed.

During the initial investigation, the police spokesperson mentioned that traces of blood were found near the left ear of the deceased who was later identified as Mojisola.

Oby Ezekwesili Blasts Tinubu’s Government: Condemns ‘Obscene Indulgence’ and Fiscal Rascality Amid National Crisis

In a scathing critique, two-time minister and former World Bank Vice President Oby Ezekwesili has lambasted the Nigerian government for its “obscene indulgence” in luxury purchases, such as the acquisition of a 16-year-old Airbus plane by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Ezekwesili’s pointed remarks underscore a growing frustration with what she describes as “fiscal rascality” in a nation grappling with widespread poverty and mounting debt.

Ezekwesili did not mince words, calling out both the executive and legislative arms of government, including the National Assembly, for their continued extravagance despite Nigeria’s precarious economic situation. She emphasized that such actions are not only irresponsible but also unsustainable, warning that the government’s insensitivity to the plight of its citizens could lead to dire consequences.

The former minister highlighted the historical pattern of wasteful spending by the government, referencing her 2013 keynote speech on the Cost of Governance, which exposed the staggering allocations to the National Assembly over the years.

Ezekwesili further expressed her disappointment in the lack of accountability from the government, pointing out that despite the public outcry and calls for transparency, the lawmakers have yet to follow through on their 2013 promise of a public debate on their salaries. Her frustration is palpable as she recounts how, a decade later, Nigerians are still suffering under the same “story-story” governance, with no end in sight.

She warned that the continued disregard for the well-being of the citizens by the Nigerian political class is a ticking time bomb. She argues that the current restiveness seen in the populace, highlighted by movements like #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, is a direct result of this neglect and could escalate if the government fails to change course.

Mpox Cases Rise In Some African Countries As They Awaits Vaccines From International Coummunity

Mpox is an infectious viral disease that can occur in humans and other animals. Symptoms include a rash that forms blisters and then crusts over, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. The illness is usually mild, and most of infected individuals recover within a few weeks without treatment.

Mpox, once referred to as monkeypox, is a virus that causes flu-like symptoms and skin blisters across the body.

Mpox cases and deaths are rising in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as the central African country awaits vaccines from the United States and Japan, the health minister said on Monday.

The toll this year has risen in a few days from 16,000 cases and 548 deaths to 16,700 cases and “a little more than 570” deaths, Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said.

“We are talking about a continental emergency,” Kamba told a press briefing as the World Health Organisation (WHO) called on affected countries to step up vaccination programmes to counter a more deadly strain of mpox.

The WHO on Wednesday declared the mpox surge in Africa a global public health emergency. Outbreaks have been reported in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda since July. A case of the new strain has also been detected in Sweden.

The United States has promised 50,000 vaccine doses for DRC, while Japan on Monday agreed Monday to send 3.5 million doses, “only for children,” a medical source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

“The vaccine is a solution to our problems,” he added, urging people to get jabbed.

Breaking: NLC Set To Shutdown The Country Economy If…

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has directed its affiliates members and indeed all workers in the country to immediately shutdown the economy if the Nigerian Police arrest the Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

Recall that the Police had last night invited the NLC President to its headquarters for questioning over the allegation of involvement in terrorism financing among others.

The development led to the convocation of emergency National Executive Council, NEC, meeting at the Labour House where the Congress resolved to write to the Police for extension of time to enable it consult with its lawyers.

Briefing the workers, who had assembled at the Labour House in solidarity with the Congress President and to follow him to the Police headquarters, the NLC Deputy President, Kabiru Ado Sani, said that the invitation to Ajaero was invitation to workers.

According to him, “At the end of the meeting, we reached some certain resolutions. Part of the resolutions is that, as a committed labour center that we agreed or that we abide by the rule of law and due process.

“We will honor the invitation of the Nigerian police, because we are not faseless organization, but we believe that we need an extension of time, after consultation with our lawyers, because this invitation was extended to the Congress President yesterday and asked to report at the police by 10am today.

So we are already working with our lawyers to look for extension of time, but this does not legitimize the charges by the Nigerian police to the Congress leadership, and secondly, we resolve that in an event our Congress President was arrested or detained at any moment, we put our affiliate on red alert to mobilize our membership across the country, that all workers in this country should down tool their services.

“This is the resolution because Comrades, this organization belongs to all of us, therefore we should do everything possible to safeguard the safety of this organization. We therefore, thank you very much, and you shoulwait for further directives by our leadership.

“Whatever happens, we will communicate your leadership, and your leadership will communicate you. So we urge you to remain calm and go back peacefully to our working place and await further directives.
