Nigeria Should Negotiate With Terrorists, Bandits And Stop Wasting Billions Of Naira On Jets, Guns – Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Gumi

Aprominent Kaduna-based Islamic cleric and former military officer, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi has told the Nigerian Government to embrace the idea of negotiation with the bandits and other non-state actors ravaging the country.

During an interview with Trust TV, the Islamic cleric stated that the government is wrong to continue spending billions of naira to combat banditry and terrorism.

According to him, the only way to secure security is for the government to engage in an open discussion with the terrorists.

He added that the root of security problems in the country could linked to the age-long farmer-herder crisis across the North and alleged that this could only be solved through negotiation and not war.

Gumi also berated the Nigerian military over the recent mistaken bombardment of Tudun Biri residents in Kaduna State, adding that the incident is an indication for the government to strengthen the capacity of the police force to stop the military from interfering in the country’s internal security.

“This is not the first time such is happening. The military should fight the military. Tank by tank. Jet by jet. The military should be out of fighting insecurity. We are not fighting Cameroon or Togo,” the cleric was quoted by Daily Trust as saying.

He continued: “And the jet fighters should not be used on citizens. I cannot imagine any American president, no matter how instructive, would use F16 to bombard Americans. Impossible. He would go down the next day.

“What we need are very good policies. Then stronger policing. That’s where our money should go. All those people should be involved in community policing.

“In every society you have very good people and they are the majority. Nigerians are very humble people; very resilient who can sustain a lot of hardship. So I don’t see why good governance and good policing should be a big deal.

“All the money we spend on buying all these Second World War aeroplanes and artillery and jets to fight insurgency is an archaic way of dealing with this issue. And billions of naira are spent on that.

“Negotiate with these people. Build for them schools and hospitals. Let them have future. Build for them markets. Even the people we call bandits, what they sometimes complain is that they no longer have cattle markets because whenever they establish market, it gets destroyed.

“So the military should be out of this picture completely. We are not fighting a foreign country. We should develop our internal security.”

The apex bank advised the public to continue with their regular banking activities without succumbing to the alarm caused by unverified reports not originating from the CBN concerning the health status of Nigerian banks.

The CBN stated that it is fully equipped to carry out its statutory duty of upholding a stable financial system in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the acting Director, Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, on Wednesday, December 27, the apex bank said,

Breaking: Ondo State Governor, Akeredolu Dies After Prolonged Illness

A family source revealed on Wednesday that Akeredolu died in Lagos.

We learnt that he was managed by State House doctors up to his death because they could not fly him abroad.

Akeredolu is dead; he died in Lagos, the source said.

''They were looking for dialysis machines to be sent to his secret location in Lagos last week.

He was 67 years old.

The ailing governor returned to Nigeria in September following a three-month medical leave in Germany and only recently proceeded on another one after he was directed by President Bola Tinubu to hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

His deputy, Aiyedatiwa has been standing in as Acting Governor.

Following his return to Nigeria in September, Akeredolu stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital and tried to govern his state from there, leading to public outrage.

On July 9, Akeredolu’s wife, Betty announced the suspension of activities lined up to celebrate her 70th birthday.

The Ondo first lady announced the suspension of the activities in Twitter posts after questions were raised over plans to have a fanfare despite her husband’s ill health.

“Hello Family and Friends. This is to inform you that all activities lined up to mark my 70th birthday are hereby suspended till further notice due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this development.”

“Nevertheless, be assured that I will be celebrated in style upon my return. Thank you for your understanding. I remain Arabinrin a.k.a Ada Owere I,” she tweeted.

A news platform exclusively reported in January that Akeredolu was treating leukemia.

“The governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu has leukemia, he is really down,” one of the sources in the Alagbaka Government House revealed at that time.

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood caused by a rise in the number of white blood cells in the body.

For sufferers, the white blood cells crowd out the red blood cells and platelets needed by the body to stay healthy.

White blood cells are potent infection fighters which grow and divide in an orderly way, as the body needs them. But in people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces an excessive amount of abnormal white blood cells, which don’t function properly.

It is a cancer of blood-forming tissues that hinders the body’s ability to fight infections.

The types that exist include acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Treatment for leukemia can be complex depending on the type of leukemia and other factors.

However, some strategies and resources can help make treatment successful.

According to WebMD Cancer Center, its symptoms may include weakness or fatigue, bruising or bleeding easily, fever or chills, infections that are severe or keep coming back, and pain in your bones or joints.

Others may include headaches, vomiting, seizures, weight loss, night sweats, shortness of breath, and swollen lymph nodes or organs like the spleen.

TTB/Union Bank: A Call for Transparency By Investigators

In the last three days, we have seen a storm of allegations regarding the ownership of Titan Trust Bank Limited (TTB) and Union Bank of Nigeria Plc ("Union Bank"), and this has captured public attention. These claims, reportedly stemming from a report submitted to the President by a Special Investigator, Mr Jim Obaze, have initiated a critical discussion around transparency. However, the lack of access to the report begs for an open dialogue to clarify the unfolding narrative.

The core accusation revolves around the former Central Bank Governor's alleged use of intermediaries in acquiring Union Bank and doubts about whether Titan Bank met the reported purchase price. To understand the gravity of these claims, it's imperative to grasp the financial magnitude of the investors steering these banks.

TGI Group, with assets exceeding ₦3.75 trillion and 2022 revenues surpassing ₦1.74 trillion, emerges as a financial powerhouse. To underscore this, the sale of its subsidiary "Chivita" to Coca-Cola Group companies in 2020 for more than USD 500 million, a figure nearly three times the alleged equity element in the Union Bank acquisition, speaks volumes about the group's financial robustness. TGI Group's financial resilience, underscored by concrete figures, paints a picture of stability.

Contrary to these allegations, documents availed necessary parties indicate that payment for Union Bank shares was indeed made, raising questions about the accuracy of claims suggesting non-payment and highlighting the importance of verifying such financial transactions. Titan Trust Bank’s chairman, Mr Tunde Lemo, has strongly refuted the allegations made by the special investigator, providing details and names that can confirm the transparency and integrity of the transaction. Drawing parallels, it's akin to questioning a transaction's legitimacy while the receipts stand as concrete evidence.

The news of Mr. Lemo being summoned by the special investigator once again has been making waves in the business community. The investigator has written a letter in reaction to the rebuttal made by Titan Trust Bank. The letter stated that Mr Lemo and TTB’s rebuttal was offensive.

The letter is filled with many allegations, and it has raised questions about the independence and bias of the investigation. Many wonder whether Mr Obaze is singling out Mr Lemo for unknown offences or if the investigation is truly unbiased and objective.

It is important to note that Mr. Lemo is a respected figure in the business community, and many have lauded his efforts. He has always been known for his dedication and hard work. Therefore, the allegations made against him have come as a surprise to many.

The scrutiny extends to Luxis and Magna, the UAE-based holding companies accused of lacking a physical presence in Dubai. Yet, in the global business landscape, such corporate structures are commonplace. TGI's financial fortitude backing these entities accentuates their credibility, emphasising the need for context in evaluating business practices. TGI, in its statement, categorically affirmed that “the entire transaction was managed by highly reputed global financial institutions including Rothschild and Citibank. And like most major acquisitions, the process took years to complete.  A USD 300 million loan was sourced from the African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim), and the rest of the capital was sourced from the proceeds of TGI’s sales of its Chi Ltd business to Coca-Cola, all to finance the acquisition of Union Bank.”

Another layer to the controversy involves a "mysterious shareholder" supposedly providing interest-free long-term loans. Examination of the financial records reveals that these loans were granted within the TGI Group, illustrating a standard business practice. Parallels can be drawn to global corporate scenarios, where loans within a closely-knit business ecosystem are considered normal.

The allegations surrounding Mr. Cornelius Vink, the founder of TGI Group, necessitate a balanced perspective. As a distinguished Dutch national, his cooperation in providing requested documents to the investigator showcases a commitment to transparency. Analogously, it mirrors other reputable figures in international business who willingly subject themselves to scrutiny.

Turning our attention to the alleged recommendation for the government to take over Union Bank, the financial stability of Union Bank and Titan Bank, coupled with the investigator's apparent lack of statutory powers for such recommendations, raises questions about the credibility of this assertion. It's akin to questioning the legitimacy of a referee's call beyond the established rules of the game. Mr Obaze lacks the necessary statutory powers to make such calls and appears once again to be arrogating powers to himself that are not legal. Perhaps we should remember and question his many ‘allegations’ against corporate entities and individuals that were just him bloviating.

Amidst this uncertainty, the call for transparency echoes louder. TGI Group's financial resilience, fortified by concrete evidence, underscores the importance of a candid dialogue to address the swirling allegations surrounding the Union Bank/Titan Trust Bank transaction. The figures presented and the parallels drawn serve as signposts guiding the need for clarity in this complex financial tapestry.

The business community eagerly awaits the outcome of this investigation and hopes the truth will come out. Until then, these questions must be answered.

1. Why did the Special Investigator go to the media instead of taking the usual investigative or legal route?

2. Is this an attempt to create negative publicity for the Banks, TGI and personalities involved without presenting any evidence?

3. If the Special Investigator believes that Mr Godwin Emefiele owns the bank as he has alleged, why hasn’t he provided any evidence after such a lengthy investigation?

4. Why is he specifically targeting and harassing legitimate business owners and professionals?

5. Is the Special Investigator suggesting that the government is willing to face significant consequences by seizing private investments, especially when the nation is actively trying to attract foreign investments?

It is prudent for Mr Obaze to remember that rather than this media trial that he has embarked on, “affirmanti non neganti incumbit probation” – the burden of proof lies on him, who asserts.

Nigeria Is Not A Poor Country – First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu

First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has said that Nigeria should not be described as a poor country.

The First Lady, in a Christmas message released after holding a Christmas party for the children of Nana Berry Orphanage in Abuja, said 2024 would be glorious for Nigerians. She advised parents to continue to give hope to their wards.

The statement read;

“As we go into year 2024, our message should be how to transform the lives of the young ones. Whoever we are, we should stop talking about poverty in front of our children, we are not a poor nation, the wealthy ones should also take care of the poor ones and make them wealthy, that is all it takes.

“We have taken the issue of poverty out of context and it is really polluting the hearts of the young ones, but we have to give them hope and show them the life that is positive. We are entering a glorious year and those who believe that it is going to be glorious will enjoy it.

“Parents are supposed to tell the children Christmas stories; that was what we all grew up with. For this year’s Christmas, we have decided to change the trajectory of what Christmas represents in the State House. For us in this dispensation, I think we have to adopt a home per year; next year, another orphanage home would come so that the children can have a sense of well-being and to give them a sense of belonging.

“They are all Nigerians. As you can see, they all have dreams like every one of us, bringing them here is for them to know that nothing is impossible. They too can become the persons God will put in place of power like this.

“This year’s Christmas celebration is also to remind them about the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, and how the love of Christ made him to lay down his life for mankind. Also, that is what we have to do as a nation, to continue to make the necessary sacrifices for a lot of people to benefit; it is not about us but for generations that are coming after us. We have to give them good foundation because we believe their lives will be better than ours.”

HeadlMembers of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn the impeachment notice that was previously sent to Governor Siminalayi Fabura.

The lawmakers officially began their sessions in the state capital of Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

The lawmakers gathered solely to focus on the withdrawal of the impeachment notice against Fubara during their deliberations.

This follows a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the warring parties in the Aso Villa in Abuja on Monday, where a truce was mediated.

TVC reports that the lawmakers announced their decision to withdraw in a notice read on the house floor, citing respect for the President as the reason behind their move.

The conflict between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, split lawmakers in the House, with 27 of them decamping from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

In a series of events that unfolded during the feud, parallel sittings emerged, an impeachment plot against the governor was uncovered, the Assembly complex was demolished, and a wave of resignations swept through the cabinet of pro-Wike commissioners in Fubara’s commissioner.

Nigerian Actor, Mr Ibu Undergoes Another Leg Amputation

Ailing Nigerian comic actor, John Okafor, aka Mr. Ibu, has undergone another leg amputation and is barely able to talk, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has revealed, while calling for prayers and support for the veteran.

The AGN National President, Dr. Emeka Rollas, in a chat with newsmen, said as the association was monitoring Ibu’s case, it was also concerned about the deteriorating health of another veteran actor, Amaechi Muonagor, who’s currently hospitalised at the Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, Anambra State, for over two months.

SaharaReporters had on November 6 reported that the family of Mr. Ibu revealed that the actor had undergone seven surgeries but to keep his hope of staying alive, one of his legs was amputated.

The family had said the actor successfully underwent five surgeries and would be flown abroad for further treatment soon.

Speaking with Vanguard, the AGN president gave an update, “We are resigning to fate concerning the two actors. As I speak with you, Mr Ibu hardly talks again and he has undergone another leg amputation.”

According to Rollas, who recently visited Muonagor alongside some of his colleagues at the Intensive Care Unit of Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, the actor’s state of health is pitiable, as he is currently a shadow of his old self.

“You will shed tears if you see Amaechi Muonagor now, his legs are completely paralyzed. I’m calling on all fans and well wishers of the actor to join hands with other philanthropic Nigerians to support him in this dire time,” Rollas said.

He revealed that he had approved the sum of N250,000 to be sent to the ailing actor’s account from the AGN Trust Fund, which, according to him, may not be enough, following Muonagor’s records with the Guild HMO and Insurance policy.

Rollas, however, urged young actors to endeavour to sign up for the AGN HMO and Insurance programmes.

The Second Coming Of Our Lord Jesus Christ Might Be On 1st Of October –Pastor Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said Jesus Christ might return to the world on October 1 of a year that is yet to be known.

Pastor Adeboye said this at a recent event in Abeokuta, Ogun State. According to him, “God was behind the scene when 1st October was chosen as Independent Day by Nigeria’s fathers of democracy.

Nigeria is a very special country. It will amaze you to know that the most amazing date in the Biblical calendar is 1st October. That is the day that is called – the feast of trumpets – and many Bible scholars believe that the most likely date that Jesus will come back again to earth will be October 1, but the year we don’t know.

The Bible says when Jesus will come back it will be with the sound of the trumpet and the day for the feast of trumpet is to start on October 1st.

Now when you consider that, you will know that God was behind the scene when our fathers (some of whom are now gone) were choosing 1st October as the day for our independence and this could explain why Nigeria has gone through so much turbulence. Sometimes when you think by tomorrow there will be no more Nigeria, you will wake up the next day and still find out that Nigeria is still standing.

No matter what is happening in Nigeria today, I firmly believe that we have a glorious future. God has a very special interest in our nation Nigeria and I want you to be encouraged.”

Cameroonian Rebels Burn Down Houses In Cross River State, Nigeria

The paramount ruler of Belegete, HRM Uchua Amos, has disclosed that the mountainous community of Belegete in Obanliku LGA of Cross River State was invaded by Ambazonia rebels from South West Cameroon who fled after burning down houses.

The monarch said the Ambazonian rebels who infiltrated the Belegete community on December 5, abducted over 40 Cross River indigenes, killed the clan head, Chief Francis Okweshi, and occupied the place for two weeks.

Residents of the community who fled after the attack, are yet to return because the insurgents had destroyed their houses. The paramount ruler said he had reached out to the army and police commanders nearby, but the security agents were unable to access the community because of its very difficult topography.

 Amos said;

“It takes over six hours from the famous Obudu Mountain Resort to get there. It is not motorable in any way. So, it was very difficult for our men to descend to the place to rescue our people”

The monarch also called for government presence in the Belegete community to deter incessant invasions of armed insurgents from Cameroon.

Lagos State Moves To Ban Beer Parlours Near Schools

The Lagos State government is considering banning beer parlours and other drinking joints from operating near or around the school environment in the state.

The state is also still consulting with relevant stakeholders over the 65 years’ retirement age policy against the current 60 years for teachers in the state employment before implementation.

The state’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, gave this hint during a question and answer session at a media briefing for the ongoing National Council on Education meeting in the state.

He explained that the proposal to ban beer parlours from operating near schools is part of the move by the state government to nip in the bud or reduce to the barest minimum cases of drug abuse and other vices, particularly among children, and adolescents in the state.

According to him, it has been observed that the selling of hard drugs and the rest are more or less being carried out around businesses and ghettos which do not augur well for the society.

“We have also come up with safety clubs in schools in which we are partnering with the security agencies such as the police, Nigerian Immigration Service, Customs services, traditional rulers, CDAs, CDCs and more.

“We have passed the message across and we are acting as an interface. Even last month, we held a meeting with all the necessary stakeholders and we are looking forward to more.

He disclosed that ‘War Against Drug Abuse’ had been launched in schools in Epe as an example of community partnering with the police and other security agencies to campaign against drug abuse and other social vices.

“We’re not stopping there; it’s a collaborative effort. We are raising our voices against the negative impacts of drug abuse in our society.

“So, we are looking for all avenues to change the narrative and part of the proposal not to have beer parlours around schools again.

“We believe that if students see, watch and move around people who drink alcoholic substances or smoke and all that, they may be tempted or influenced to want to do the same. We don’t need to wait for such to happen before we arrest the situation.”

The commissioner, however, pointed out that the matter is still a proposal to be subjected to legislation before it becomes the state government’s policy and when that would be, is still unknown. (Nigerian Tribune)

Recognizing the impact of environmental pollution on the local population, the bank is extending agency banking services, bridging the financial gap between rural and urban areas.

Awe underscored the collaboration with Global Entrepreneurship City Limited, emphasizing an initial emphasis on cassava cultivation. "Our strategy is geared towards sustainability, creating jobs, and contributing to foreign exchange earnings," he stated.

Dr. Douglas Fabeke, CEO of Global Entrepreneurship City Limited, addressed the project's significance, outlining plans for a cassava processing factory and an agricultural research centre to empower Ogoni farmers. Despite challenges like a lack of start-up capital, the project aims to revive farming and fishing, crucial occupations hindered by years of neglect.

The Ogoni farmers, represented by Mrs. Mary Eko Joe, expressed heartfelt gratitude to The Alternative Bank for alleviating their struggles and supporting widows and orphans.

With a shared commitment to upliftment, the farmers extended their appreciation and optimism for the continued success of The Alternative Bank.
