Polaris Bank, Partners support 16,000 Students to reduce Out-of-School Children in Nigeria

Polaris Bank, in partnership with key stakeholders, has reaffirmed its commitment to combating the alarming rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

Through its targeted interventions, the Bank has ensured continuous education for over 15,000 students, providing them with the opportunity to learn, thrive, and contribute to a better future.

While the initiative primarily focuses on empowering the girl child, male students in the targeted schools were not left out reflecting the project's inclusive approach.

Polaris Bank’s collaboration with strategic partners has further strengthened its efforts to combat the scourge of out-of-school children in Nigeria. Since 2020, these collaborative efforts have ensured continuous education for 16,000 students, showcasing the transformative impact of teamwork in fostering positive societal change.

The initiative which includes empowering young learners with brain training techniques and emotional intelligence education alongside making and distributing school essentials (bags, uniforms, sandals, books, and pens) aligns with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4 which ensures inclusive and equitable quality education for all, is targeted at Nigeria’s most vulnerable communities, where over 20 million children lack access to basic education, according to UNESCO.

This phase of the initiative targeted schools across diverse regions of the country, providing needed school essentials such as; school bags, sandals, uniforms, books, and pens to students. Research has shown that the lack of one or two of these basic school essentials has been a significant barrier to school enrolment, contributing to the alarming number of the scourge of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

Polaris Bank’s Managing Director/CEO, Kayode Lawal speaking on the education initiative charged students to embrace opportunities that education offers saying that the intervention is in line with the Bank’s ongoing sustainability efforts aimed at reducing Nigeria’s current out-of-school children population and increasing access to quality education, especially for the girl-child.

As part of its broader mission, Polaris Bank between November and December 2024 visited eight schools across various states, including Opebi Junior Grammar School in Lagos, National High School Arondizuogu; Iheme Memorial Secondary School; Akokwa High School in Imo State, Government Girls Secondary School, Kundila in Kano, Fortune Secondary School in Kogi, and Government Day Junior Secondary School, Maitama in Abuja, with that of Gbaja Junior and Secondary School, both in Surulere, Lagos moved to mid January 2025.

The program aims to support 50,000 students by 2028, building on its current impact of 16,000 students across nine states.

Beyond the provision of school essentials to indigent students of public schools, the initiative also embeds the Brighter Minds Programme, a transformative project bringing innovative brain-training techniques and emotional intelligence education to young learners.

This program has achieved remarkable milestones, expanding access to a holistic learning approach that builds resilience, focus, and confidence in students.

Each pilot group represents a new step in the journey of empowering young minds with life skills, made possible by the unwavering support of Polaris Bank, partners like EvolveCSR, schools, and parents.

Complementing this educational intervention, is the Inspire Teachers Training Program, a 3-day value-based education initiative aimed at equipping teachers with critical soft skills and alternative teaching methodologies.

This program explores topics such as heartful teaching, facilitation techniques, heterogeneous learning strategies, effective communication, heart-centered education, self-connection, and moral skill development.

Teachers who complete the program receive certificates and are encouraged to share their knowledge by training peers, fostering a ripple effect that promotes a soft-skills-driven approach to education.

While the initiative has made significant strides, the final batch of schools to be visited—Gbaja Girls Junior and High Secondary School, Surulere, Lagos — has been postponed to January 2025. This adjustment highlights the Bank’s commitment to ensuring no child is left behind in its drive to provide access to quality education.

Polaris Bank remains resolute in its mission to bridge educational gaps, ensuring a brighter future for Nigeria’s youth through impactful and sustained interventions.

By empowering students and supporting educators, the Bank continues to lead efforts to transform the lives of Nigeria’s future leaders.

Buhari Not Personally Involved In Land - Garba Shehu

Garba Shehu, former spokesperson for ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has addressed reports that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) revoked a plot of land allocated to the Muhammadu Buhari Foundation.

Shehu clarified on Wednesday that the land in question does not belong to the former president personally but was lawfully acquired for the foundation by associates acting in good faith.

The Foundation, established by associates of the former president with lawful backing from supporters, encountered challenges with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA). The authority issued a certificate of occupancy fee deemed exorbitant and reportedly inconsistent with charges faced by similar organisations.

While the reasons behind the revocation remain unclear, Shehu suggested it might stem from either an error or intentional administrative actions. He added that Buhari, as an individual, already owns a plot of land in Abuja, allocated to him before his presidency.

During his tenure, Buhari declined an additional land offer, stating that priority should be given to those without allocations.

Shehu urged critics to verify facts before drawing conclusions and cautioned against dragging Buhari’s name into unnecessary controversies.

Committee of Banks in Nigeria Donates Multimillion Naira Relief Materials to Jigawa Flood Victims

The Committee of Banks in Nigeria on Thursday lifted the victims of the recent flooding in some parts of Jigawa State with a solidarity visit to Dutse, the state capital, during which they made donation of assorted items of relief materials to the State Government as part of their own contribution to alleviate the plight of those impacted by the September 2024 natural disaster.

The donation of the relief materials comprising food items, including bags of rice, cartons of vegetable cooking oil, mattresses, and beverages were presented to the Governor of Jigawa State, Malam Umar A. Namadi, by a high-powered delegation of the Committee of Banks in Nigeria led by their Chairman and Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (GMD/CEO), United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA), Dr. Oliver Alawuba.

Other banks’ CEOs that were on the delegation included the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (GMD/CEO), Access Bank Plc, Mr. Roosevelt Ogbonna; Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (GMD/CEO), Zenith Bank Plc, Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji; and Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (GMD/CEO); Fidelity Bank Plc, Dr. (Mrs.) Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe.

In his remarks while presenting the relief materials, Dr. Alawuba stated that the gesture by the bankers was one of the ways to empathise with the government and people of Jigawa State, and importantly the residents who were severely impacted by the floods. He added that the relief materials were targeted at boosting the current multi-stakeholder efforts to support the flood victims in getting back on their feet, as well as supporting critical institutions that provide care for the victims, especially public hospitals.

“I stand before you today as the Chairman of the Committee of Banks in Nigerian, to demonstrate our solidarity with the Government and good people of Jigawa State. Principally, we are in Jigawa State to empathize with the State Government, families, and relations of those who were severely impacted by the recent flooding that occurred across some local government areas of the state, in specifically in September this year. We pray for the repose of souls that were lost in the devastating floods, as well as comfort for their families. We also pray for the recovery and restoration of those who lost properties and valuables during the floods,’’ he said.

Speaking further, Dr. Alawuba asserted: “We are here today to lend our hand of help to the State Government by donating relief materials worth several millions of Naira in support of the affected residents, and also critical institutions that provide care such as public hospitals. We believe the relief materials consisting of food items such as; bags of rice, cartons of vegetable cooking oil, mattresses, and beverages would go a long way in providing comfort and lessen the burden of the victims impacted by the floods.’’

The Chairman, Committee of Banks in Nigeria added that the humanitarian gesture was a testament to the Nigeria banking sector's commitment to supporting the well-being of Nigerians in times of need. “As bankers, we are not just concerned about the economic implications of natural disasters; we are also deeply troubled by the human suffering that accompanies them. We believe that it is our collective responsibility to support those affected and help them rebuild their lives,’’ he noted.

Dr. Alawuba stated that the gesture further affirmed the commitment of the Nigerian financial institutions to leading from the front as agents of positive change in society, while assuring that they would continue to work together to support those in need, promote economic growth and development, and to contribute to the well-being of our great nation.

He expressed gratitude to his colleague CEOs of Nigeria banks for their generosity and contribution to the relief effort. “Your support underscores our unrelenting passion for national development and care for the environment where we do our business,’’ he applauded.

Dr. Alawuba affirmed the long history of commitment of the Nigerian banking and financial institutions to the well-being of the Nigerian people and the environment, stating that the banking sector provided similar interventions to the victims of the 2011 flooding which affected 28 states and that of 2013 flooding which affected 32 states of the federation. Other interventions by the financial institutions include corporate support for the management and containment of the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, including funding support for public healthcare infrastructure, and access to credit for micro and small businesses to stay afloat in the post-pandemic era.

He said, “Notably, we were proud to be part of the Central Bank of Nigeria-led Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID) Relief Fund, where we contributed significantly to the Fund's efforts to provide palliatives to vulnerable Nigerians and strengthen the nation's healthcare infrastructure. The intervention of the banking sector resulted in over Thirty-two Billion Naira (N32 billion) being pooled to fill a significant funding gap for the governments during the unexpected global pandemic.

“Furthermore, as we navigated the post-pandemic era, Nigerian banks played important roles in helping businesses recover. Banks in Nigeria supported firms of all sizes, to mitigate the impact of the extended lockdown and disruption to business activities in many ways. Through the stabilization funds, Nigerian banks provided loans and credits to small and medium businesses to stay afloat, thereby ensuring business sustainability, preventing job losses, and fostering national economic growth.’’

Additionally, Dr. Alawuba said Nigerian banks also support many other laudable initiatives across both economic and non-economic sectors, one of which is in the area of security. For example, he said banks have continued to support the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, which has become a model copied by other states for sustainable funding of the training, equipment, and welfare needs of personnel of the Nigeria Police deployed to the state. He said the support has led to improved security of lives and property in the state.

He disclosed further that the banking sector supported the government in rebuilding and remodeling of Police stations destroyed in the wake of the #EndSARS protesters, in 2020. With the support, he added that officers and men of the Nigeria Police now have more befitting workplaces to function.

The bankers commended Governor Namadi, the federal and state governments, donor agencies and other stakeholders for the efforts in responding to the need of the victims of the flooding, while noting that, through collective efforts and actions, we could all make a big difference in the society, as well as build a prosperous nation that works for all.

Responding, Governor Namadi thanked the Committee of Banks in Nigeria for their humanitarian gesture, describing it as a rare demonstration of love, care and empathy for humanity. He said he was particularly touched receiving such a high number of bank chiefs leaving their offices to come and show solidarity to the families and individuals affected by the flood.

“On behalf of the government and people of Jigawa State, I want to most sincerely thank you for this visit. Certainly, what you have done today has demonstrated a good sign of love, care and maturity because, I don't think it has ever happened like this, for four managing directors of the big Nigerian banks leaving their offices and come and sympathise with us on the incident that happened to us; that has shown the serious sign of love, care and maturity,’’ he enthused.

Governor Namadi assured that the state government would continue to seek opportunities to work together with the financial institutions as critical enablers of socio-economic growth, adding that with the significant support of the banks, the task of supporting the flood victims to get back to normal life had received a boost.

He stated, “So whilst I really thank you very much, I assure you that as we go on we will continue to work together for the betterment of this country.  Certainty, some time two of you at one time or the other has done something to help out Jigawa State and today again we are putting ourselves together as the body of banks’ CEOs also coming to our aide, to help our people and bring them back to life in order to move forward.’’

The governor gave the assurance that the donated relief materials would be judiciously used and get to the people they were meant for. “I also want to assure you that the Jigawa State government will continue to work together with you, to ensure that we improve the lives of those affected by the devastating floods.

“Like we said, these people have really suffered a lot; they lost their means of livelihood which is not easy at this time, but with the people and body like yourself, these people have a lot of hope and then at least they are being shown they have brothers and sisters that are there for them in their time of need. So, we really appreciate this gesture and we are not taking it for granted. We pray that God almighty will replenish your purse for what you have done for our people,’’ Governor Namadi stated.

Other personalities on the delegation for the donation of the relief materials were President, Association of Corporate Affairs Managers of Banks (ACAMB), Mr. Rasheed Bolarinwa; the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Mr. Akin Morakinyo, and others.

Judge Orders Adele’s ‘Million Years Ago’ Song Pulled Globally Over Plagiarism Claim

A Brazilian judge has ordered a song by British pop superstar, Adele’s 2015 hit song “Million Years Ago” to be removed from global streaming platforms due to a plagiarism claim by Brazilian composer, Toninho Geraes.

The ruling, issued by Judge Victor Torres in Rio de Janeiro’s sixth commercial court, demands Sony and Universal Adele’s record labels, to stop the use, distribution, and monetisation of the track worldwide. Failure to comply could result in a fine of $8,000 per offence.

“This is a landmark for Brazilian music, which has often been copied for major international hits,” said Fredimio Trotta, Geraes’ lawyer.

The injunction threatens the Brazilian subsidiaries of Sony and Universal, Adele’s labels, with a fine of $8,000 “per act of non-compliance”.

The music companies, however, can still appeal the decision.

His preliminary injunction, obtained on Monday by AFP, orders Sony and Universal to stop “immediately and globally, from using, reproducing, editing, distributing or commercializing the song Million Years Ago, by any modality, means, physical or digital support, streaming or sharing platform”.

“It is a landmark for Brazilian music, which … has often been copied to compose successful international hits,” Fredimio Trotta, the lawyer for Brazilian composer, Toninho Geraes, who brought the plagiarism complaint, told AFP.

Trotta said his firm this week would work to ensure that radio and television broadcasters, and streaming services around the world, are alerted to the Brazilian ruling.

His client Geraes claims Adele’s 2015 song plagiarized the music of his samba classic Mulheres (Women), recorded by Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila on a 1995 hit album.

Geraes is suing for lost royalties, $160,000 in moral damages, plus songwriting credit on Adele’s track.

Sony Brazil said it did “not have a statement at this time”, while Universal Music Brazil did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trotta said the injunction should have a chilling effect on foreign singers and labels looking to rip off Brazilian tunes.

“International producers and artists who … have Brazilian music ‘on their radar’ for possible parasitic use will think twice, given this decision,” the lawyer said.

Adele was also accused by Turkish music fans of plagiarism in Million Years Ago in 2015. They claimed its tune was similar to one in a 1985 song by a Kurdish singer, Ahmet Kaya, called Acilara Tutunmak (Clinging to Pain).

Kaya died in exile in France in 2000, and his widow said it was unlikely a global star like Adele would do such a thing.

Brazil is a signatory to the 1886 Berne convention that agrees international protection for copyrighted works.

You Have 72 hours To Return All Government Vehicles With You - Edo Governor Tells Ighodalo, Running Mate, Others

The Edo State Government has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party's candidate in the recent governorship election, and other politicians to surrender government vehicles in their possession.

This directive was issued by Kelly Okungbowa, Chairman of the Government Assets Recovery Committee, on Tuesday, as part of the state's efforts to recover public assets.

The Recovery Committee has made allegations that certain vehicles formerly owned by the defunct Edo Line government transport company were illicitly sold and have since been located in a spare parts market in Benin City, Edo State's capital.

“We want to use this medium to appeal to those people whose names have been mentioned, to please return those vehicles to the authorities, because they are not my property,” Okungbowa was quoted by Channels TV as saying.

He continued: “Those vehicles are the property of the state government, for the Edo people. And we all know the cost of buying one vehicle.

“To buy a brand-new Hilux costs you nothing less than N120 million. Where do they expect the governor to get that kind of money to purchase new vehicles?

“We want to appeal to them, especially the candidate of the PDP, Barrister Asue Ighodalo and his running mate. It is good for us to also advise them as a father and leader in the state, that they should do the right thing by returning those vehicles.

“It may interest you that those vehicles that have been recovered - the governor has directed that we should reallocate them to the agencies, and we have done that.

“Mr Governor went to Edo Line during the time of his electoral campaign. He said he would revamp Edo Line. When we got there, there was no vehicle. We got some information that those vehicles were taken from the Edo Line and sold.

“This morning, we got information, and we went to a place called Uwelo Spareparts. We discovered about 12 vehicles there. Six were movable, six were not movable. We have the video here.

“While we are appealing, the government will also decide on its own. We are not here to witch-hunt anybody. We are doing our job according to the law. It is not that we don’t know where some of them were kept. They took some of the vehicles to Lagos, Abuja, and Abeokuta. But we are appealing to them, and follow due process.”

The committee also listed the names of officials attached to the previous administration who are allegedly still in possession of government vehicles, and advised that such vehicles be returned within 72 hours.

“We are giving them another 72 hours to do the needful. If they fail to do it, then, we will do the needful,” he added.

Nigerian Senate Movs To Ban Use Of Dollar, Other Foreign Currencies For Transactions

A bill that proposes to amend existing laws to ban the use of foreign currencies in transactions and payments within Nigeria's borders has been introduced by the Senate and has successfully passed its first reading.

The bill seeks to stop  the use of foreign currencies for payments and transactions within the country.

The bill, which is titled, “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, No. 7, to Prohibit the Use of Foreign Currencies for Remuneration and for Other Related Matters,” was sponsored by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation.

He posits that if passed, the bill will position the Naira as the central currency for all financial operations, reinforcing its dominance in the economy.

The proposed legislation, stipulated that all payments including salaries and transactions are made using the country’s currency - Naira.

The sponsor of the bill, Senator Nwoko, contends that its passage will eradicate discriminatory practices and bolster confidence in the Nigerian Naira.

This includes making it mandatory for exports to be paid for in Naira.

According to Nwoko, the widespread use of foreign currencies in Nigeria’s financial system undermines the value of the Naira, perpetuating economic challenges.

He described the use of the Dollar, Pound Sterling, and other foreign currencies for domestic transactions as a “colonial relic that continues to hinder Nigeria’s economic independence.”

The bill will also prohibit salaries, transactions, and payments in foreign currencies, which ensures that all workers, including expatriates, are paid in Naira.

Other proposals in the bill include the abolishment of informal currency markets that undermine the formal economy and encourage unethical practices such as round-tripping by banks.

Cabal In Tinubu’s Government Are More Dangerous Than Any Other – Former Minister, Dalung

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung has said that there is a cabal in the Bola Tinubu’s government with people who are more informed and sophisticated than those who formed the cabal in Muhammadu Buhari’s presidency.

In the political space, a cabal refers to highly-placed individuals in a government who have hijacked it and run it their own way.

Dalung said these individuals keep the president out of the loop, shield him from prevailing realities and ward off anyone trying to bring him up to speed.

He said while the cabal in President Buhari’s government were just after what they could get, those in Tinubu’s government have been in power for a long time, well informed, sophisticated and more dangerous.

He disclosed this during a chat with Journalist, Seun Okinbaloye in the podcast ‘Mic On.’

Dalung who was axed from Buhari’s government after the first term cited an example where some information he gave to President Buhari regarding insecurity were not readily available to him because those in position to do so were shielding him from the real situation on ground.

“Cabal exists in Nigeria’s presidency till today. Tinub has the most sophisticated cabal, worse than Buhari.” He said

“Buhari’s cabal was a group of uninformed people with little experience, that was why they were dipping their hands in everything that was available, but Tinubu’s cabal is a sophisticated group of people who have been long in power, they know power, and they are also informed. So they are more dangerous than any other cabal that I’ve ever known and seen.”

Dalung further disclsoed that he is not afraid of death and being attacked after his statement as he has survived ten assassination attempts already and believes he will one die when his time has come.
