The Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin City, the Edo State capital, has ordered the indefinite closure of the institution and issued 48 hours notice to students to vacate its Campuses.
The management’s decision, according to the report, was due to the extension of the eight-week strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which began on February 13, 2022.
The Registrar of the University, Mr Ademola Bobola on Tuesday in a circular stated that the decision was taken after due consultation with the Management of the University and the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, on behalf of the Senate.
The statement enjoined the students to monitor the situation closely in order to be abreast of the school’s eventual re-opening.
The University’s authority also wishes the students a safe journey to their respective destinations.
According to the registrar, “following the extension of the four-week strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and after due consultation with the Management of the University of Benin, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, on behalf of the Senate, is closing down the University until further notice.
“The action has become expedient as there is no justifiable reason for students to continue to stay on campus when lectures and other academic activities are not going on.
“Consequently, students are to vacate the hostels within forty-eight (48) hours of this notice and you are enjoined to monitor the situation closely in order to be abreast of the school’s eventual re-opening”.
Investigation however revealed that some students of the institution were allegedly engaging in social vices.
The development was said to have prompted the Management of the University to order the closure of the institution indefinitely.
“The students were asked to leave the Campus because of the unpleasant reports of social vices amongst students within and outside the Campuses,” the source disclosed.
